A recent news report shows by illustration how the practice of law is changing in downtown San Antonio. It used to be that San Antonio was a big small town and lawyers (like me) could have an office right across the street from the courthouse. It wasn't far from the country lawyer ideal. A lawyer could office in a highrise over a golf course in north San Antonio, office in an idyllic suburban tree-filled setting, or in a historic downtown office. As urban infill development comes to San Antonio like it has to Austin and other cities, lawyers (who used to be among the few interested in braving downtown crowds for office room) are being outbid by folks who want to live and work downtown. A holdout in this is attorney George Scharmen whose historic office building is now sandwiched between concrete buildings like something out of a Las Vegas nightmare or a Donald Trump hotel plan.
