Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently appointed Cassie Brown to serve the remaining unexpired term of former Commissioner Ryan Brannan. The Commissioner oversees the Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers Compensation.
Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Cassie Brown as commissioner of Workers’ Compensation at the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) for a term set to expire on February 1, 2019.
Brown had most recently worked as deputy commissioner at the TDI in a different area. Some background:
Cassie Brown of Austin is deputy commissioner for Regulatory Policy at the Texas Department of Insurance, where she has served since 2011. Previously, she served as a policy advisor to Governor Rick Perry. Brown received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from St. Edward’s University and attended the Governor’s Executive Development Program at The University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs.
It is unclear at this point what level of workers compensation knowledge she brings to the table. Some of the issues affecting the DWC in recent years have involved the TDI's failure to exercise full oversight over issues related to healthcare networks, so Brown's background at TDI in regulatory issues may be helpful to the system.
